FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: June 1, 2026 Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

DURBAN, KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA — Durban United Basketball Club, South Africa's first and premier college and professional development international basketball academy, is proud to officially announce the appointment of Joseph "Will" Campbell as the club's Vice President of Basketball Operations and Head Women's Basketball Coach. The announcement marks another defining moment in the continued organizational growth of Durban United Basketball Club as the program builds the world-class leadership infrastructure needed to match its world-class ambitions.

Campbell steps into a powerful dual role that places him at the very center of Durban United's basketball operations and on-court leadership. As Vice President of Basketball Operations, he will work alongside President of Basketball Operations Kevin Williams Sr. and Program Director William Price to shape the strategic direction of the club's competitive program. As Head Coach of the Women's program, he will bring his considerable coaching experience, championship-level standard, and deep understanding of player development directly to the athletes who are counting on Durban United to help them reach the next level.

His appointment is effective immediately.

A Basketball Life Lived at the Highest Levels

Joseph "Will" Campbell is not a man who simply talks about basketball at an elite level — he has lived it, competed in it, and dedicated his professional life to it. From college courts in the American South to professional leagues across the United States, from the basketball courts of the Dominican Republic to the rapidly growing basketball culture of China, Campbell has built a basketball résumé that spans decades, continents, and every dimension of the game.

College Career — University of Memphis

Campbell's basketball journey at the collegiate level took him to the University of Memphis, one of the most storied and respected basketball programs in the United States. Competing at the NCAA Division I level, Campbell developed his game in one of the most competitive college basketball environments in America — an environment known for producing professional players, elite competitors, and basketball-first cultures that demand excellence every single day.

The experience of playing college basketball at a program like Memphis — competing in the American Athletic Conference against some of the nation's top talent — gave Campbell the foundational understanding of what high-level, professionally structured basketball looks like, feels like, and demands from those who participate in it. That foundation would serve as the bedrock for everything that followed in his basketball career.

Professional Career — American Basketball Association (ABA)

Following his college career, Campbell pursued professional basketball in the American Basketball Association (ABA), one of the longest-standing and most widely recognized professional basketball leagues in the United States. The ABA has served as a development and competition platform for thousands of professional players across its history, providing a high-level competitive environment for athletes working to advance their professional careers.

Campbell's time in the ABA demonstrated his ability to compete at the professional level — to sustain the work ethic, the physical preparation, and the competitive sharpness required to play basketball as a profession. It also deepened his understanding of team dynamics, professional basketball culture, and what organizations and coaches look for when evaluating talent at the next level.

Professional Career — Universal Basketball Association (UBA)

Campbell's professional playing career also included significant time in the Universal Basketball Association (UBA), further extending his professional playing experience and competitive résumé. Competing across multiple professional leagues in the United States gave Campbell a comprehensive, multi-dimensional view of American professional basketball — its structures, its demands, its culture, and the kind of preparation and professionalism required to sustain a career within it.

This breadth of professional playing experience across the ABA and UBA is an invaluable asset in his new role as Vice President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach at Durban United. He does not speak to student-athletes about professional basketball from a theoretical perspective. He speaks from direct, personal, lived experience — and that makes all the difference.

International Career — Dominican Republic & China

Perhaps the most directly relevant dimension of Campbell's playing career to his new role at Durban United Basketball Club is his international basketball experience. Campbell has competed professionally in both the Dominican Republic and China — two vastly different basketball cultures and environments that between them represent the breadth of the global basketball marketplace.

Playing basketball internationally is an experience that transforms a player's understanding of the game. It demands adaptability, cultural intelligence, mental resilience, and a willingness to compete and perform in environments that are fundamentally different from anything experienced domestically. Players who have competed internationally bring a perspective to development and coaching that those who have not simply cannot replicate.

For Durban United Basketball Club — a program that travels internationally to the United States and Europe, and exists specifically to prepare athletes for international basketball opportunities — a leader who has personally navigated the challenges and opportunities of professional basketball on two different continents is not just valuable. He is essential.

Campbell understands what it means to pack your bags, cross an ocean, step into a foreign basketball culture, and perform. That understanding will inform every aspect of how he develops, prepares, and advocates for Durban United student-athletes as they pursue their own international opportunities.

Coaching Career — Women's Basketball in Atlanta, Georgia

Beyond his decorated playing career, Joseph "Will" Campbell has invested himself deeply in coaching women's basketball — building a meaningful and impactful track record of developing female athletes in one of the most competitive basketball markets in the United States.

Campbell served as a coach at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, a respected academic and athletic institution in the Atlanta, Georgia area. His work with the program's women's basketball team gave him direct experience in developing young female athletes within a structured, values-driven, high-accountability environment — the exact kind of environment that Durban United Basketball Club is committed to providing for its own women's program.

Additionally, Campbell has coached at the AAU level with Hoop Dreams AAU, one of the most recognized and competitive AAU basketball organizations. AAU coaching at a high level demands an ability to identify talent, develop skills rapidly, manage competitive schedules, and inspire young athletes to perform at their best in high-stakes environments. Campbell has done all of this — and done it successfully — as a women's basketball coach in one of America's most competitive basketball cities.

His experience coaching women's basketball in Atlanta has given him a sophisticated, nuanced understanding of what female athletes need from their coaches — not just tactically and technically, but personally and professionally. He understands how to build trust, how to challenge players in ways that bring out their best, and how to create a program culture where women feel genuinely supported, genuinely pushed, and genuinely prepared for the opportunities that lie ahead.

As Head Coach of the Durban United Women's program, Campbell will bring every dimension of that coaching experience to bear on behalf of the talented female athletes who are choosing Durban United as their platform for development and advancement.

I have known Will Campbell for sixteen years. Sixteen years of watching him compete, lead, build, and deliver. Sixteen years of shared conversations about basketball, about business, about what it really takes to build something meaningful in this game. When you have that kind of history with someone — when you have seen them at their best and you have seen how they respond when things get difficult — you develop a level of trust that goes far beyond a résumé or an interview. That is the trust I have in Will Campbell, and that is exactly why I did not hesitate for a single moment when it came to bringing him into this organization.*

Will has done things in basketball that very few people in this world have done. He played college basketball at the University of Memphis. He played professionally in the ABA and the UBA. He competed internationally in the Dominican Republic and in China. He has coached women's basketball in Atlanta at a high level, developing players and building program cultures that produce results. That combination of experiences — playing, coaching, international exposure, professional league competition, women's basketball development — is extraordinarily rare. I cannot think of a single person more qualified or more perfectly positioned to serve as Vice President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach at Durban United Basketball Club.

*But beyond the credentials, what makes Will Campbell the right person for this role is his character. He is someone who leads with integrity, who invests in people, and who brings a genuine, unshakable passion for player development to everything he does. Our student-athletes — male and female — are going to be in the best possible hands. I am proud to have him by my side as we continue to build Durban United into one of the most respected basketball development programs in the world. Sixteen years of trust has led us to this moment, and I could not be more excited about what we are going to build together.

— Kevin Williams Sr., President of Basketball Operations, Durban United Basketball Club

First and foremost, I want to express my deep gratitude to Kevin Williams Sr. and the entire Durban United Basketball Club leadership team for this incredible opportunity. Kevin and I have built something real over sixteen years — a friendship, a professional respect, and a shared belief in what basketball can do for people when it is organized, developed, and led the right way. To now have the opportunity to bring all of that shared vision into this organization, in this role, at this particular moment in Durban United's growth — it is something I do not take lightly, and I am fully prepared to honor the trust that has been placed in me.*

I have played basketball at every level. I have competed in college at the University of Memphis. I have played professionally in the ABA and the UBA. I have packed my bags and gone to the Dominican Republic and to China to compete internationally — and I can tell you from personal experience that there is no substitute for that kind of exposure. Playing internationally changes you as a basketball player and as a person. It teaches you things about yourself, about the game, and about what it means to perform under pressure in an environment that is completely outside your comfort zone. That is exactly the kind of transformative experience that Durban United is built to provide for its student-athletes, and I intend to draw on every lesson I have learned on those international courts as I develop, prepare, and inspire the athletes in our program.

As Vice President of Basketball Operations, my expectation is clear: I am here to help build a program that is not just the best in South Africa, but one that is recognized and respected globally. We are going to set a standard of professionalism, of competitive intensity, and of athlete development that is unmatched on this continent. Every decision we make — every scheduling choice, every partnership we pursue, every development initiative we implement — will be made with one priority in mind: giving our student-athletes the absolute best opportunity to succeed at the next level, wherever that next level takes them.

As Head Coach of our Women's program, my expectations are equally high. I have coached women's basketball in Atlanta — at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy and with Hoop Dreams AAU — and I have seen firsthand what female athletes are capable of when they are given a coach who truly believes in them, challenges them, and builds a program culture that demands excellence while providing genuine support. That is exactly what I am going to bring to the Durban United women's program. I am going to push every athlete in this program to be better than they thought they could be. I am going to prepare them for the physicality and pace of elite competition. I am going to make sure they have the film, the highlights, the visibility, and the college placement support they need to pursue every opportunity available to them. And I am going to do all of it within a culture of respect, accountability, and belief — because that is the only culture worth building.

*Durban United Basketball Club is doing something genuinely extraordinary in South Africa, and I am honored, energized, and completely ready to be a part of it. To every student-athlete who is considering this program — I want you to know that I am coming into this role with everything I have. Your development, your opportunity, and your future are my highest priority. Let's get to work.
