DURBAN, KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA — Durban United Basketball Club, South Africa's first and premier college and professional development international basketball academy and proud member club of the National Basketball League — Africa (NBL-Africa), made a historic organizational announcement today, naming Fides Njau as the club's first-ever General Manager.

The appointment of Njau represents a landmark moment in the young but rapidly growing history of Durban United Basketball Club. As the first individual to hold the General Manager title in club history, Njau steps into a role that carries enormous significance — not only for the future direction of Durban United, but for the broader landscape of professional basketball development in South Africa and across the African continent.

With a forward-thinking approach, a commanding presence in business management, Fides Njau enters this role with a clear and powerful mandate: shape the direction of the game, strengthen Durban United's global presence, and elevate the culture surrounding South African basketball to new heights.

The appointment takes effect immediately.

A Historic Appointment for a Historic Club

As the first college and professional development international basketball academy in South Africa, the club was built from the ground up on the belief that African athletes deserve world-class development opportunities — and that South Africa, specifically, has the talent, the passion, and the potential to produce basketball players who can compete and thrive on the world stage.

The naming of a General Manager marks the next phase of Durban United's evolution — a deliberate, strategic step toward building the organizational infrastructure needed to match the club's growing competitive profile and international ambitions.

In Fides Njau, Durban United Basketball Club has identified a leader whose background, accomplishments, and vision make her not just qualified for this role, but uniquely suited to define it.

About Fides Njau — General Manager, Durban United Basketball Club

Fides Njau is a dynamic executive whose career has been defined by a consistent pattern of entering spaces, identifying opportunities for growth, and delivering results that extend well beyond expectations. Her appointment as Durban United's inaugural General Manager is the natural next chapter in a story built on excellence, leadership, and purpose.

Now, as General Manager of Durban United Basketball Club, Njau brings all of that experience, credibility, and ambition to bear on one of the most exciting and consequential roles in South African basketball. She enters the position focused on three core priorities:

  • Shaping the strategic direction of Durban United Basketball Club — ensuring the organization's decisions, partnerships, and programs are aligned with a clear and compelling long-term vision
  • Strengthening the club's global presence — building and expanding the international relationships, partnerships, and competitive opportunities that position Durban United as a globally recognized institution
  • Elevating the culture of South African basketball — raising the standard, the profile, and the expectation of what basketball development in South Africa can and should look like

Statement from Fides Njau

General Manager, Durban United Basketball Club

To be named the first General Manager in the history of Durban United Basketball Club is an honor that I do not take lightly. This is not just a title — it is a responsibility, and I am walking into this role with a full understanding of what that means. Durban United Basketball Club is not an ordinary organization. It is a program that is doing something genuinely extraordinary: creating world-class pathways for young men and women in South Africa to compete, develop, and succeed at the highest levels of basketball — here at home and around the world. That mission matters to me deeply, and I am fully committed to doing everything in my power to ensure that we continue to grow, to deliver on our promises to our athletes, and to build something that this country can be proud of.*

When I look at the young men and women who are part of this program — athletes who are competing in NBL-Africa, traveling to the United States and Europe, working toward college scholarships and professional contracts — My job is to build the organizational structure, the partnerships, the resources, and the culture that gives those athletes every possible advantage. That is exactly what I intend to do.

*I am grateful to President of Basketball Operations Kevin Williams Sr. and to the entire Durban United Basketball Club leadership for the confidence they have placed in me. I do not take that trust for granted. Durban United is on its way to becoming one of the most recognized basketball development programs in the world, and I am proud, excited, and ready to be a part of that journey from this moment forward. We are just getting started.

— Fides Njau, General Manager, Durban United Basketball Club

Statement from Kevin Williams Sr.

President of Basketball Operations, Durban United Basketball Club

The decision to name Fides Njau as our first General Manager was not made quickly, and it was not made casually. It was made because, when you look at everything this organization is trying to accomplish — the competitive ambitions, the global aspirations, the developmental mission, the business infrastructure we need to build — you need someone in that General Manager seat who can operate at every level simultaneously. You need someone who understands the game. You need someone who understands business. You need someone who understands people. And you need someone who has the track record to prove they can deliver when the expectations are high. Fides Njau is all of those things and more.*

What struck me most about Fides was not just her resume — which is remarkable for someone of her age — but the clarity with which she sees the future of this organization and this sport. She did not walk into this conversation with us talking about what she wanted. She walked in talking about what Durban United needs, what our athletes deserve, and what South African basketball is capable of becoming on the world stage. That perspective — that selfless, mission-first approach to leadership — is exactly what this role demands.

*Fides Njau is going to be transformative for this organization. She is going to strengthen our operations, elevate our partnerships, expand our international footprint, and most importantly, she is going to protect and amplify the environment we have built for our student-athletes. I could not be more confident in this decision, and I could not be more excited about what the future holds for Durban United Basketball Club with Fides leading the way as our General Manager.

— Kevin Williams Sr., President of Basketball Operations, Durban United Basketball Club

The Road Ahead — Durban United's Vision Under New Leadership

With the addition of Fides Njau as General Manager alongside Athletic Director Keonna Farmer and President of Basketball Operations Kevin Williams Sr., Durban United Basketball Club has assembled a leadership team that is built for the demands of a growing, globally ambitious sports organization.

Together, this leadership triad will guide Durban United as the club continues to:

  • Expand its NBL-Africa competitive program for both male and female athletes
  • Grow its international travel schedule, including competitions and exposure events in the United States and Europe
  • Deepen its college placement pipeline, connecting more South African athletes with scholarship opportunities at American colleges and universities
  • Develop new partnerships and sponsorships that strengthen the club's operational and financial foundation
  • Expand NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) opportunities for Durban United student-athletes
  • Build the Durban United brand into a globally recognized symbol of excellence in basketball development
