DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — May 23rd, 2026 — Durban United Basketball Club is proud to officially announce the launch of its groundbreaking international basketball development program, a one-year college and professional pathway academy designed for men’s and women’s post-grad basketball players ages 18–23.

Set to begin in January 2027, Durban United Basketball Club will provide student-athletes with a complete basketball development experience that includes elite-level training, competitive games, college exposure, domestic opportunities, international opportunities, game film, highlight video support, player marketing, and participation in the National Basketball League-Africa.

Durban United Basketball Club is being established as the first college and professional development international basketball academy in South Africa, creating a new pathway for athletes who are looking to continue their basketball journey beyond high school, prep school, post-grad programs, local clubs, or traditional amateur competition.

The program will feature both men’s and women’s teams, giving serious student-athletes the opportunity to train, compete, travel, and be evaluated in a structured basketball environment built around development, exposure, and next-level opportunities.

“Durban United Basketball Club represents a revolutionary step forward for basketball development in South Africa and across the international basketball community,” said the Durban United Basketball Club Board of Directors. “This program was created to give student-athletes a real bridge between where they are today and where they want to go tomorrow. We believe Durban United can open doors to college basketball, domestic competition, international exposure, and professional opportunities in a way that has never been done before in South Africa. This is more than a basketball club. This is a movement built to change lives through the game.”

Durban United Basketball Club will operate as a one-year program beginning in January 2027, giving athletes a full development calendar to improve their game, build their player profile, compete against high-level competition, and prepare for college or professional opportunities.

The teams will compete against colleges, universities, club teams, local programs, regional opponents, and professional development teams, while also participating in NBL-Africa competition. Through this structure, Durban United athletes will receive consistent game experience and exposure against a variety of playing styles and competition levels.

The program is designed to serve athletes who are serious about their basketball future. Players will have the opportunity to compete in local, domestic, and international events while being supported through film, player promotion, and basketball development resources.

Durban United Basketball Club will focus on helping athletes pursue:

College basketball opportunities
Domestic basketball opportunities
International basketball opportunities
NBL-Africa competition
Professional development opportunities
Exposure games against colleges and universities
Club team competition
Opportunities to play abroad

One of the major goals of Durban United Basketball Club is to provide athletes with exposure that traditional prep, post-grad, and club programs may not be able to offer. The program will combine South African basketball development with international basketball connections, creating a pathway for players to be seen by colleges, scouts, professional teams, and international basketball decision-makers.

Durban United will also emphasize the importance of complete player development. Student-athletes will receive elite-level coaching and training focused on skill development, basketball IQ, strength, conditioning, leadership, discipline, accountability, and preparation for the next level.

Every game will be videotaped, giving players access to valuable film for evaluation, improvement, recruiting, and promotion. Durban United will also assist athletes with highlight video support and player marketing to help them build a stronger basketball profile.

In addition to on-court development, Durban United Basketball Club will help student-athletes understand the modern basketball landscape through player branding and NIL education. The program will support athletes in learning how to promote themselves professionally, build visibility, and understand the value of their name, image, and likeness.

The Board of Directors believes the creation of Durban United Basketball Club can help change the future of basketball development in South Africa by giving both men and women a true international platform.

“South Africa has talented basketball players who deserve structure, exposure, development, and opportunity,” said the Durban United Basketball Club Board of Directors. “Durban United was created to provide that opportunity. Our vision is to build a program where student-athletes can train at a high level, compete against serious competition, travel, gain film, receive marketing support, protect their future opportunities, and pursue college or professional basketball. We are proud to bring this model to Durban and to help create a new basketball pathway for the next generation.”

Durban United Basketball Club will accept athletes ages 18–23 for both the men’s and women’s teams. The program is ideal for unsigned players, post-grad athletes, international prospects, college hopefuls, and players seeking a professional development environment before pursuing opportunities abroad.

Durban United Basketball Club is now preparing for player interest, program updates, team announcements, recruiting information, partnerships, and future showcase opportunities.
